LIGHT IN THE DARK è un progetto espositivo volto a sviluppare e promuovere la collaborazione interdisciplinare tra il mondo dell'arte e quello della scienza, avente come finalità: offrire una visione consapevole e correlata alle nuove scoperte scientifiche dell’Universo in cui viviamo. Questa visione apre la porta a riflessioni più profonde sulle complesse dinamiche dell'essere umano, sulla sua origine e sul rapporto che abbiamo con la natura. Ricordandoci che tutto è in tutto, "Light in the dark" collega il macrocosmo al microcosmo, l'universo all'uomo; è un inno alla vita, alla sua complessità e alla sua magia.
LIGHT IN THE DARK is an exhibition project aimed at developing and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between the worlds of art and science, having as its purpose: to offer a conscious vision related to new scientific discoveries of the Universe in which we live. This vision opens the door to deeper reflections on the complex dynamics of human beings, their origin and the relationship we have with nature. Reminding us that everything is in everything, "Light in the dark" connects the macrocosm to the microcosm, the universe to man; it is a hymn to life, its complexity and its magic.
SUPERNOVA
Simbolo di ciclicità dell’universo
Il ciclo pittorico "Supernova" (dal 2017) vuole portare l'attenzione sul fenomeno e sulle conseguenze dell'enorme esplosione che caratterizza la fine della vita di una stella: la supernova. Tutto il materiale rilasciato dall'esplosione è all'origine della formazione di nuove stelle. La supernova è simbolo di morte e rinascita e della natura ciclica dell'universo. In questi spettacolari eventi cosmici si formano elementi più pesanti del ferro, grazie ai quali la vita, come noi la conosciamo, è possibile. Ricordando che tutto è in tutto, "Supernova" collega il macrocosmo al microcosmo, l'universo all'uomo, la scienza alla trascendenza. Per l’artista rappresenta un inno alla vita, alla sua complessità e alla sua magia.
The "Supernova" painting cycle (from 2017) aims to bring attention to the phenomenon and consequences of the huge explosion that characterizes the end of a star's life: the supernova. All the material released by the explosion is the origin of the formation of new stars. The supernova is a symbol of death and rebirth and of the cyclical nature of the universe. In these spectacular cosmic events, elements heavier than iron are formed, thanks to which life, as we know it, is possible. Remembering that everything is in everything, "Supernova" connects the macrocosm to the microcosm, the universe to man, science to transcendence. For the artist, it represents a hymn to life, its complexity and magic.
DARK MATTER
Cambio di paradigma
Il ciclo pittorico "Dark Matter" è un'evoluzione della serie "Supernova". Il soggetto della serie rimane l'enorme esplosione stellare, a cui è aggiunta in senso metaforico una "Materia Oscura". Gli effetti pittorici della fosforescenza, non visibili in presenza di luce, si rivelano nell'oscurità, modificando inaspettatamente l'estetica dell'opera che si presenta con nuovi colori e forme - due opere su di un unico supporto. Così come siamo abituati a usare la luce per vedere le cose, ora, invece, dobbiamo togliere la luce per vedere la fosforescenza: a volte è necessario un cambio di paradigma per riuscire a spiegare i meccanismi della creazione. "Dark Matter" evidenzia la necessità di utilizzare l’immaginazione e ogni strumento a nostra disposizione per comprendere ciò che ci è oscuro. La materia oscura è tale in quanto, non emettendo nessuna radiazione elettromagnetica, è invisibile ai mezzi tecnologici con i quali esploriamo la fisica subatomica o il nostro Universo. Nella nostra realtà sappiamo che a seconda dello strumento di indagine che utilizziamo - fisico, razionale o percettivo - le informazioni che riceviamo cambiano, rivelandoci un mondo molto più complesso e vario di quanto potessimo immaginare. Questo succede anche a chi guarda le opere di questa serie.
The "Dark Matter" pictorial cycle is an evolution of the "Supernova" series. The subject of the series remains the huge stellar explosion, to which a “Dark Matter” is metaphorically added. The pictorial effects of phosphorescence, which are not visible in the presence of light, are revealed in the darkness, unexpectedly changing the aesthetics of the work, which appears with new colors and shapes - two artworks on a single support medium. Just as we are used to using light to see things, now, on the other hand, we have to remove light to see phosphorescence: sometimes a paradigm shift is necessary to be able to explain the mechanisms of creation. "Dark Matter" pictorial cycle highlights the need to use our imagination and every tool at our disposal to understand what is obscure to us. Dark matter, as it does not emit electromagnetic radiation, it is invisible to the technological means with which we explore subatomic physics or our Universe. In our reality we know that depending on the instrument of investigation we use - physical, rational or based on our perceptions - the information we receive changes, revealing to us a world far more complex and varied than we could have imagined. This also happens to those who look at the works in this series.
DARK ENERGY
Acceleratore del cosmo?
La serie “Dark Energy” - naturale proseguimento della serie “Dark Matter” - oltre ai pigmenti fosforescenti, incorpora nelle opere pigmenti fluorescenti i quali reagiscono alla luce ultravioletta che è comunemente chiamata "luce nera". L’associazione tra luce nera ed energia oscura ha portato alla realizzazione di questa serie di opere d'arte che mostrano un’estetica completamente differente quando il pigmento fluorescente viene illuminato dalla luce ultravioletta, così come quando l’opera è osservata in totale assenza di luce. In questo modo si creano tre diverse opere su di un unico supporto. La “Dark Energy” o “Energia Oscura” è prevista da alcuni modelli cosmologici per giustificare l’esistenza di una forza antigravitazionale che pervade tutto l’universo; essa sarebbe la causa della sua espansione accelerata. Altri modelli cosmologici tuttavia non necessitano la presenza di tale energia.
The "Dark Energy" series - a natural continuation of the “Dark Matter" series - in addition to phosphorescent pigments, incorporates fluorescent pigments in the works, which react to ultraviolet light that is commonly called "black light." The association between black light and dark energy, led to the creation of this series of artworks that shows a completely different aesthetic when the fluorescent pigment is illuminated by ultraviolet light as well as when the work is observed in total absence of light - three artworks on a single support medium. "Dark Energy" is predicted by some cosmological models to justify the existence of an anti-gravitational force that pervades the entire universe; it would be the cause of its accelerated expansion. Other cosmological models, however, do not require the presence of such energy.
QUANTUM MULTIVERSE
Una torta a strati di universi paralleli
L'idea che esistano miriadi di universi è stata proposta da Hugh Everett III nella sua tesi di dottorato intitolata "The theory of the universal wave function" (1957). Per addolcire questo concetto, pensiamo a una torta a strati paralleli con una base circolare. La torta rappresenta la funzione d'onda dello stato generico di "tutto ciò che esiste". Ogni strato della torta corrisponde a un elemento di sovrapposizione della funzione d'onda, che possiamo anche chiamare "mondo" o “universo”. Ogni strato della torta è diverso dagli altri e contiene universi paralleli. Partendo da questa idea nelle opere della collezione "Quantum Multiverse", i cerchi variegati, disposti a caso su uno sfondo nero, rappresentano alcuni degli universi paralleli che si trovano nel vuoto cosmico.
The idea that myriad of universes exist was proposed 1957 by Hugh Everett III in his doctoral dissertation entitled "The theory of the universal wave function" . To sweeten this concept, let us think of a parallel layer cake with a circular base. The cake represents the wave function of the generic state of "everything that exists“. Each layer of the cake corresponds to a superposition element of the wave function, which we can also call "world" or "universe." Each layer of the cake is different from the others and contains parallel universes. Building on this idea in the "Quantum Multiverse" works, the variegated circles, randomly arranged on a black background, represent some of the parallel universes in the cosmic void.
INFLATIONARY MULTIVERSE
Bolle di schiuma cosmica
La serie Inflationary Multiverse, nata alla fine del 2018, raffigura l'idea dell’esistenza di una costellazione di universi a bolle che possono avere diverse costanti fisiche nel tempo e/o nello spazio. Secondo la meccanica quantistica, la struttura dello spazio a scala particellare può fluttuare in modo casuale, dandogli l'aspetto di una caotica schiuma di sapone. La cosmologia quantistica teorizza che a circa 10-36 secondi dal Big Bang l’Universo abbia attraversato una fase inflazionaria gonfiandosi in una frazione di secondo di circa 1078. Alcuni modelli inflazionari caotici prevedono l’esistenza di una costellazione di universi a bolle soggetti a diverse leggi fisiche. Inoltre il momento della formazione di una bolla inflazionaria può essere considerato come un nuovo “Big Bang”. Questa idea è all'origine di questa serie di opere d'arte, in cui i colori e le forme di un universo - metafora delle diverse leggi che li governano - si mescolano al confine con i colori e le forme di altri universi. Questi multiversi artistici, con le loro forme morbide e irregolari, riprendono l'idea della fusione e della separazione di "bolle di schiuma cosmica".
The series Inflationary Multiverse, born in late 2018, depicts the idea of the existence of a constellation of bubble universes that can have different physical constants in time and/or space. According to quantum mechanics, the structure of space at the particle scale can fluctuate randomly, giving it the appearance of chaotic soap foam. Quantum cosmology theorizes that about 10 to the -36 seconds after the Big Bang, the Universe went through an inflationary phase inflating in a fraction of a second by about 10 to the78. Some chaotic inflationary models predict the existence of a constellation of bubble universes subject to different physical laws. Furthermore, the moment of the formation of an inflationary bubble can be regarded as a new "Big Bang." This idea is the origin of this series of artworks, in which the colors and shapes of one universe - a metaphor for the different laws governing them - are mixed at the border with the colors and shapes of other universes. These artistic multiverses, with their soft and irregular shapes, take up the idea of the merging and separation of "cosmic foam bubbles“.

Enrico Magnani è un artista italiano conosciuto per le sue opere che integrano arte, scienza e spiritualità. Approdato definitivamente al mondo dell’arte dopo un eclettico percorso che lo ha visto per anni ricercatore scientifico nell’ambito della fusione nucleare, ad un certo punto della sua carriera, Magnani ha sentito l’esigenza di procedere in quei sentieri della conoscenza dove la speculazione puramente razionale non basta. Dopo un primo periodo figurativo, le sue originali opere astratte lo hanno rapidamente portato all’attenzione inter-nazionale e a partire dal 2010 sono state presentate in musei, fondazioni, gallerie private e istituzioni pubbliche in Europa e Stati Uniti. Recentemente ha cominciato a tenere seminari e laboratori formativi sulla creatività nell’arte e nella vita attraverso l’uso costruttivo dell’errore e dell’intuizione.
Enrico Magnani is an Italian contemporary artist known for his works that integrate art, science and spirituality. His definitive establishment in the world of art follows an eclectic path which he started out as scientific researcher in the field of nuclear fusion. At a certain point in his career, Magnani felt the need to proceed along those paths of knowledge where purely rational speculation is not enough. After an initial figurative period, his original abstract works quickly brought him to international attention and since 2010 they have been presented in museums, foundations, private galleries and public institutions in Europe and the USA. He holds seminars and workshops on creativity in art and in life through the constructive use of error and intuition.
